Happening This Week #9: Talent Show

(Thank you Rocky for the graphics!)

Everyone knows how the agency likes to have lots of fun and games, so this probably won't come off as a surprise to a lot of people. Last 4th of August 2018, there was an event on the FIB Discord server which gathered over 20 people in the voice channel, and this was the Talent Show that was hosted by the Events Team. Anyone was allowed to show any talent of theirs, be it playing an instrument, singing, or any other intriguing talent. The audience got to vote who were their favorites, and by the end of the show, the winners were announced.

Judges' Favorite: Nwoob

First Place: PIate AKA Lee the Unknown

Second Place: EpiDuk AKA EpiPiano

Third Place: MOD-eli AKA ukulele queen

Let's talk to the winners and see how they liked the event, shall we?

How was the event? Did you enjoy it? PIate: The event was really fun and I hope it happens again but a competitive one. I really enjoyed it even though some people didn’t manage to win and I hope I win again if there’s another show.

EpiDuk: It was very fun! I really enjoyed playing for lots of people and it’s a fun way to display my talent to an audience!

MOD-eli: I really enjoyed it! Everyone was so talented. :D Nwoob: The event was great! It was fun cause I was waiting for another karaoke event, and the talent show came in, so I joined in even after I was 30 minutes late.

Were you nervous when performing? PIate: Yes. I was really really nervous and scared since there were like over 20 people in the voice channel, and I’m Asian, so my voice would probably sound weird compared to the others. But my bbg, Kim, encouraged me to do it. My voice was alright when I was practicing the high notes but when I was performing, it was shaking real bad.

EpiDuk: Oh heck yeah. I played a song that took me a year to play and I didn’t practice prior to this event. I didn’t wanna screw up with people hearing me play.

MOD-eli: A little! Mostly nervous before I started, heh. Nwoob: Not at all, I perform a lot In real life. The only thing I was scared about is if my mic was good.

Do you have a background story to your talent? (e.g., when you started singing) PIate: No, there wasn’t. I didn’t have voice lesson or anything. I just like singing everywhere I go. And yes, I mean everywhere. It can be while I’m doing my business in the toilet or showering. I also like to sing with my friend in real life who can sing really well; she gives me feedback so I can improve on my singing.

EpiDuk: I started when I was 6 years old. I get taught lessons from this woman who plays for a church.

MOD-eli: I taught myself how to play instruments, wrote songs, did covers and sang for fun in school, then I joined a national talent show and a local band. After a few years of gigs and fun, we disbanded and went our separate paths. However, I carry my love of music till now. :> Nwoob: Umm... The first song I learned to sing was Grenade, when I was like 5. It was terrible, but my family loved it, then I joined music clubs and stuff, and there I go.

In the future, would you like to see ET hosting another talent show, or something similar, if so what? PIate: A singing competition. And yes, I mean competition; there should only be one winner.

EpiDuk: I would like to see a repeat of this. As for something similar, maybe a music festival? Like there’s a DJ and we listen to litty songs and get turnt up.

MOD-eli: Yes! I would love to join another talent show; this has been extremely fun. :D Nwoob: Yes yes, I do! I think we should have talent shows like every month, or maybe people can make music videos and upload them.

What word of advice would you give to those who were too nervous or scared to perform?

PIate: Just do it; thicken your face. You can show your talent to the people you don’t know, and you might somehow inspire them to work hard if they can’t sing.

EpiDuk: Well, I’d say that everyone who is good at singing or playing an instrument who is too scared to perform should know that everyone who HAS performed has been in the same position. It is fun though, and you can improve!!! MOD-eli: Don't be nervous! I know it's easier said than done but just focus on having fun and you'll do amazing! x Nwoob: It's better to try and fail, than not to try at all. People need a more "f*ck it" mentality.
