I Don't Know.
You loved this day. This day was full of the happiest moments you would probably have. You were sitting in front of a bonfire, camping with some of your closest friends and your significant other. You gave him a small peck on the cheek and he settled his head in the crook of your neck. Even after three years of continuous dates and nights spent together, he still managed to make your heart flutter. You grin back at him sweetly, giving out a small chuckle. You couldn’t help think how fortunate you were at this moment. You had everything; everything you wanted. It was like a story right out of a fairytale. But, like every amazing story, there’s always a storm right after the calm. What you didn’t know was that your perfect, perfect life would come crashing down in a matter of a few minutes. You and your friends were playing a game of confessions. And remember, everyone had drunken quite a bit but you, being the goody two shoes you were, you didn’t drink. Sitting there, sober, laughing at everyone’s drunken selves. After a couple of people confessing, it was finally your best friends turn. You looked at her amused, curious to what she would say. After all, you were her best friend so you doubted that there was anything she hid from you. And just like any dramatic story, there was. You felt your boyfriend tense up as soon as she stood but you paid no attention to it. She started confessing, swaying an almost empty beer bottle. You didn’t really listen to her confession, figuring that you would have already heard it. But then you heard your name being mentioned. “-Doesn’t even know. So, her and her boyfriend were arguing about stuff and they both ignored each other. Her boyfriend came to me, ranted and we kissed and this continued for like 2 months. You told me you loved me didn’t you? Then why haven’t you left her yet?!” As soon as you heard her words, you immediately froze. The entire group went dead silent and the only thing being heard was the fire cackling in the air. Your head was just screaming, telling you to leave that instant. “We met up again and we were both drunk and we both went to personal levels.” Your breath hitched and your heart just drops to the floor. You just hoped that she was talking under the influence of alcohol and all of this was fake. “Then after a couple of weeks, the sexual chemistry was too much and we did it again.” She stopped there, staring at you and your boyfriend as if she was expecting something to happen. After processing what had happened, you stood up slowly, your head spinning and your heart just, hammering, against your chest. You started running, bolting away from the campsite to avoid them. All of them. You sat down at the bottom of a tree, on the dirt. Almost right after, someone grabbed your hand and pulled it away from your face.
“- Stop. Please stop running away. Don’t cry.”
“Was it true?” You asked almost immediately, lips trembling, facing the ground. “Was it all a lie? All the I love you’s, the kisses, the late night calls, all of it? It was all fake?” You couldn’t help but look up and meet those gorgeous blue eyes. The exact ones you fell for three years ago. Except this time, you weren’t falling in love. You were torn by it, tears streaming down and you looked so utterly broken. But he decides to inflict more pain, answering your question anyways. And nothing could scar you as much as these three exact words did.
“I don’t know.”
